The Party of Democratic Socialism (Partei des Demokratischen Sozialismus—PDS) is the successor to the East German Communist Party (SED) that ruled in the German Democratic Republic until 1989. The PDS was founded by reformist elements of the SED who gradually moved the party away from its advocacy of Marxism–Leninism and toward moderate socialism. As of 2005, the PDS entered into an alliance named the Party of the Left (Die Linkspartei) with the Labor and Social Justice Party to bolster its insignificant support in the former Federal Republic of Germany.
